Why Some Big Earning Authors are Leaving Patreon

Some authors making upwards of ten-thousand dollars a month on Patreon are migrating away from their website. Turns out Patreon isn’t as sex positive as many people believe, at least not consistently.

If you have “adult content” (ie. sex) in the writings you have available behind your paywall, they make it harder to find your page in a search. For example let’s say you have a steamy romance author you would like to follow on Patreon.

You go to the search bar and enter their name correctly. As you are typing, a drop down appears with possible matches to your search. Even though you have entered the name perfectly, the author you are looking for does not appear. This might lead you to believe they do not have a Patreon at all.

But you saw something in the author’s newsletter so you go ahead and click on “see all results.” Even then the author you are looking for may not be on the first page of your search results. They will definitely not be the top result even though they are a 100% match for what you typed in.

They claim the allow people to “Create on your terms,” but they also block content that is available on places like Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Apple Books, Google Books, etc. And they sure make it difficult to find the authors you might be looking for.
